Stapes surgery
Also known as exploratory tympanotomy - a microsurgical procedure to restore hearing when the stapes bone has become fixed, typically due to otosclerosis.
After a small skin incision inside the ear canal, the canal skin is lifted and the eardrum opened. The operation is performed under an operating microscope.
The surgeon confirms stiffness of the stapes, loosens the joint between the stapes and the incus, divides the stapes stems with a laser and removes the stapes superstructure. A precise opening is then created at the base of the stapes with a laser, drill or fine reamers.
The stapes is replaced with a custom-made prosthesis: one end is attached to the long process of the incus and the other placed in the opening at the oval window. The prosthesis is secured with a laser, restoring continuity of the ossicular chain.
Once the procedure is complete, the wound is closed with sutures, a tampon is placed in the ear canal and a dressing applied over the wound.
